Have you ever seen “grade the seams” in pattern directions and said to yourself, “This seam is excellent! A+!”
I bet all of your seams are pretty great. But some could be even better through the process of grading to reduce bulk. Grading is especially useful when you have three or more layers of fabric in a seam.
Take this view of a graded back double-yoke seam in a Make a Point Dress. The bottom is the original 5/8 inch (1.5 cm) seam. The black in the middle has been graded to 3/8 inch (1 cm) and the top has been graded to less than 1/4 inch (.5 cm).
When these graded seams are pressed to one side, they will nest together nicely, reducing bulk.
